We owe it to ourselves

Preventative health is a much bigger opportunity for progress than we often talk about. I came to appreciate the benefits of prevention from an economics perspective during my previous life in the agriculture industry. A multi-trillion dollar industry isn’t built on prevention if it isn’t successful.

Another trillion dollar industry we could discuss is pharmaceuticals, which works hand in hand with agriculture, and profits from us getting sick. I utilize resources produced by industry every day, but I have trouble with blind acceptance that trades our personal success for theirs.

What I’m getting at is that we have the power to change this. I’m not saying we won’t take medication or won’t eat packaged food, but the more effort that we put toward the choices we make, the greater chance we have at a longer and happier life.

Here are a few references for healthy motivation:

  • Dr. Joe Dispenza discusses personal health responsibility in You are the Placebo, which illustrates ways in which our psyche has the ability to override our physiological states.
  • Dr. Pradeep Deshpande, a Louisville resident, provides scientific based evidence to improved performance through mediation.
  • Alcohol is our most widely accepted and detrimental drug. Here’s a great article that explains what happens to your body when you stop drinking.
  • Fed Up is a great motivator during times that sweet cravings may tempt you to cave.
  • Communion; we must feed our soul by being with our tribe. If you’re into forecasts, The Power Path does an awesome Trends talk annually and this year features personal relationships.

I think New Year resolutions are wonderful, and that one might have the greatest success in starting small. Maybe it’s as simple as timed 2 minute daily mediation, or changing up your shower routine to train your brain in different patterns, a favorite tip provided by Megan Bartley, MAMFT, LMFT.

Maybe if we recognize our responsibility to our health as our biggest investment in this lifetime, we might be more motivated to stick with the work.

Every day you get the opportunity to make choices that positively affect your life. If it happens to hit the pockets of the “Petrochemical-Pharmaceutical-Military-Industrial-Transnational-Corporate-Fascist-Elite”, as Gatewood Galbraith would say, I bet they’ll survive.
